FINANCE AND BANKING / by Miguel Gallardo Guerra
Digitalization and legal technology have recently experienced exponential growth
in the Mexican market. This phenomenon has been driven by the need to
optimize processes, reduce costs, and improve access to legal services.
Implementing digital tools in the legal field has revolutionized the operations of
lawyers and law firms and significantly impacted the accessibility of
legal services to the general public.
One of the most outstanding innovations in the Mexican legal sector has been
the introduction and generalized implementation of electronic signatures. This
tool has enabled streamlining procedures and agreements, reducing waiting
times and costs linked to traditionally manual processes. In addition, digitizing
records and legal documents has improved efficiency in records management,
facilitating access to information and data-driven decision-making.
Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are increasingly important in the
Mexican legal sector. These technologies are currently employed to automate
repetitive tasks, such as reviewing and comparing documents, creating simple
texts or summaries of laws, and preparing texts for emails. This enables legal
professionals to concentrate on tasks with more excellent value and complexity.
Some legal firms are starting to adopt artificial intelligence systems, such as
Copilot, Harvey, Chat GPT 4.0, etc.
Nevertheless, the implementation of these technologies presents significant
challenges as well. It is essential to update laws and regulations to address the
ethical and privacy issues arising from AI and data analytics. Furthermore, there
is a pressing need to encourage the ongoing training and updating of legal
professionals in these new technologies, ensuring their proper and efficient
implementation. Finally, Mexican legal firms must create internal policies for
adopting AI and informing clients about its use, promoting transparency,
providing information to clients, and seeking approval for implementing these
new technologies, as necessary.
In summary, digitalization and legal technology are changing the Mexican legal
market, providing new possibilities to enhance the delivery of legal services and
decrease fees and expenses. As these technologies evolve, their impact on the
legal sector is expected to grow, necessitating ongoing adaptation by legal
professionals and an update of internal policies and regulations of legal service
providers to ensure their appropriate integration into the Mexican legal
framework.
